Scleral Contact Lenses

Scleral contacts are large lenses that fit on the scleral (white part) of the eye. This design allows the lens to "fit over" irregular shaped corneas, which makes it a good choice for patients with keratoconus or those who need further vision correction following refractive surgery. In fact, virtually any type of eye condition that can be corrected with a contact lens can be corrected with a scleral lens including the most distorted corneas and the most advance cases of keratoconus and irregular astigmatism. Since scleral lenses can hold extra moisture against the eye, these lenses are a choice for patients with dry eyes. When fitted correctly, scleral lenses are just as comfortable as soft lenses.
