Scleral contacts are large lenses that fit on the scleral (white part) of the eye. This design allows the lens to "fit over" irregular shaped corneas, which makes it a good choice for patients with keratoconus or those who need further vision correction following refractive surgery. In fact, virtually any type of eye condition that can be corrected with a contact lens can be corrected with a scleral lens including the most distorted corneas and the most advance cases of keratoconus and irregular astigmatism. Since scleral lenses can hold extra moisture against the eye, these lenses are a choice for patients with dry eyes. When fitted correctly, scleral lenses are just as comfortable as soft lenses.
